Outreach and Missions
At Sandy Mount United Methodist Church, we are engaged in outreach and missions that impact our congregation, our community, and the world. Our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in." Matthew 25:35
SHELTER MINISTRIES
Sandy Mount UMC is engaged in two shelter ministries. Human Services Programs of Carroll County runs several shelters for homeless people in the community. From November through March, teams from Sandy Mount volunteer every Friday night at the Cold Weather Shelter, sometimes taking a hot meal and always supporting the clients, and some Thursdays and Saturdays as well. Other teams take a meal to the Safe Haven Shelter three Thursday evenings a month. For more information on these ministries, contact Audrey Boyle for Cold Weather Shelter, and Tina vonGunten for Safe Haven.
CAMP H.O.P.E.
Sandy Mount sent a team of youth and adults to Frostburg, Maryland to participate in Camp H.O.P.E. in July 2011.This was the 5th year that SMUMC has participated in this important mission work. The teams worked with donated supplies and borrowed tools to replace roofs, fix decks and porches, and conduct general maintenance. United Methodist churches in the Frostburg area feed the teams during these four one-week shifts. For more information on Camp H.O.P.E. please contact Beth Mangano.
VOLUNTEERS IN MISSION HOPI RESERVATION
From August 12 - 20, 11 people from Sandy Mount UMC, Damascus UMC and one other church traveled on a mission trip to the Hopi Reservation in Kykotsmovi, Arizona. This was Sandy Mount's second VIM trip and was an exciting opportunity for cross cultural missions as we developed relationships with the Hopi people. The team assisted the Hopi Foundation in several activities and stayed at the Hopi Mission School Volunteer Center. The team also spent time working at the school. For more information please contact Robyn Gilden.
SERRV - Brethren Service Center New Windsor
Sandy Mount sends a team of volunteers once each month to the SERRV center in New Windsor. These volunteers assist in preparing materials which are sold in the SERRV shop. For more information please contact Dave Pyle.
